Through observational studies of islands and headland landforms from her studio located in Matapouri Bay, Northland, Kathryn Carter explores a sense of place in her paintings that connects her to the New Zealand landscape. Marking Time is an eleven week investigation into belonging in an unknown and new type of world that is not at all familiar. Carter posed the question: How do we stay sane in a world of lockdowns and quarantine that we have no apparent control over? This collection of works is her response as she gained a sense of calmness through watching nature, the passing of storms across the sky and sea, and the intersection of sky and sea at the horizon, providing a unique observational opportunity that she quotes “has been visually and experientially incredible”.
